I seek a position solving difficult software/systems engineering problems. Specific interests are in data mining, machine learning, parallel/distributed computing, and computational finance. Flexibility to pursue formal and informal educational goals concurrently with employment is necessary.
Skills:
- (Languages / protocols / platforms:)
C, PERL, Java, Linux/FreeBSD/OSX, HTTP, SQL, DNS, SMTP, SSH, NFS, Ruby, IP networks, X Windows, LabView, FORTRAN, C++, KDE API.
- (Other competencies:)
Dynamically generated web content, IP routing, client/server applications in inhomogeneous platform environments, utilization of computing clusters, familiarity with Linux Kernel source, founding and administration of non-profit organizations, RF and photonics test and measurement, scientific computing.
Employment Experience:
- 10/2004 -- 2/2007: Development Engineer, Aculight, Inc. - Bothell, WA.
Building and characterization of prototype laser systems for customers. Data taking, interpretation, and communication with internal and external customers. Development of data gathering / hardware control systems. LabView, photonics test and measurement.
- 5/2003 -- 7/2004: Contract Software Engineer, University of Washington, Seattle, WA
Modified real-time seismic monitoring system running on Solaris, to support an XML/trigger interface for Shakemap software via a dynamically loadable module. Modified Shakemap software to interface with the module, then ported Shakemap to FreeBSD. Wrote software that analyzes the Washington State Bridge inventory along with Shakemap data and automatically provides a bridge inspection priority list to WSDOT in the event of an earthquake. Built a system that automatically publishes Shakemaps and associated XML data for public, media, and government consumption via FTP, SSH, and HTTP. (Used C, Perl, and bash on FreeBSD and Solaris.)
- 5/2002 -- 5/2003: Lead System Administrator, Galaxy-7.net, Seattle, WA
Linux/FreeBSD/Network and server administration. Routing, DNS, Apache, SSH, email, virtual hosting, FTP, DSL, NFS, Samba, and general network administration. Custom solutions for customers. Successful business development.
- 12/2002 -- 5/2003: RF Network Field Engineer, Cortland Electronics, Seattle, WA
RF transport, link, and protocol level network design engineering and troubleshooting. Contributed substantially to the creation of a custom Linux distribution for embedded routers. (TCP, UDP, ICMP, 802.11, ATM, ethernet, routing, various application-level protocols), RF test and measurement.
- 7/2000 -- 1/2001: Photonics Intern, Intel Corporation, Santa Clara, CA
Test engineering and design of test systems for active and passive optical components.
- 5/1999 -- 12/1999: Programmer, Purdue University School of Management, W. Lafayette, IN
Wrote software to mirror and analyze a remote database. (Perl on Solaris and Linux)
- 2/1995 -- 8/1997: Founder, W3 Advertising, Birmingham, MI
Web development on Linux. HTML, CGI scripting, Perl, and other internet programming.
- 1/1995 -- 4/1996: Engineering Intern, Automotive Analytics, Inc., Bloomfield Village, MI
Developed mechanical stress analysis/modeling software in FORTRAN and C on Irix.
Education:
- Purdue University, BS with Honors, Applied Physics, May 4, 2002.
Specialized in photonics / optoelectronics, measurement, and simulation. Included two years of part-time, paid undergraduate research work. Studied abroad for one year at the University of Bath, Bath, United Kingdom.
- University of Washington, Computer Science and Engineering, expected BS in 2009.
Core CS curriculum. Particularly interested in data mining, machine learning, parallel/distributed computing, and computational finance.
